Having taken the first steps towards a healthy way of living, you decide to enroll in the local gym. The first few days at the gym can be pretty intimidating. There are all kinds of equipment in front of you and you have no clue which one is for what. Everyone else seems as if they really know what they are doing, and in the best shape! The sight of well toned women and buff men, running tirelessly on the treadmill. Then there is the dude in the sleeveless shirt throwing caution to his newly gained muscles, hair thrown back with a bandana, the sighing and puffing at the bench press, ears firmly plugged into their music players. Add to that, all the jargon that gets thrown at you! Cut to chase.
The first few days at the gym are what decide whether you adopt it for keeps. Often, lack of information leads to a weaning interest and ultimately the gym gets thrown into the back burner. Also, not a lot of us have the luxury of a personal trainer!
Before hitting the gym, the most important thing to do is to be clear with what your gym goal is. Whether it is to lose fat, gain muscle or maintain yourself- that should be set out clearly.
To help you begin, I will list some of the goals that you may have.
- You are slightly on the heavier side and need to shed a few pounds
- You are on the thinner side and need to gain weight by adding some muscle
- You are happy with your frame and intend to maintain
Ideally, when we talk about weight loss, it should not lead to muscle attrition. You only want to target the fat. Similarly, if you want to gain weight, you should be looking at gaining muscle, unaccompanied by any fat.
These are broadly some of the goals people usually have. Others could be getting washboard abs or dropping your body fat to athletic proportions. Remember to not be overly unrealistic with your goals. Do you have a goal set for yourself? Drop in with your set of goals :) Those of you who are already into gymming can tell us what your goals were and how successful you were!

Excellent description how gym looks like!! I joined it once but could not continue it for long duration. Probably there are no drastic changes that could drive me to continue gym. I cannot afford trainer but in case you can give me complete plan on how to increase weight(diet plan) i can try it out and post results.. :)
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to be fit but also slim and not very muscular, and except for past few months have been just that.
ReplyDeleteJoining gym again from today, and the goal is more or less to stay fit, another reason is that it always feels good if your are working out and that feeling of mild pain :)
I have been a regular at the gym and it is an integral part of my life now. My goal at the gym is to increase my stamina and maintain an ideal weight as I have the tendency to gain weight if I am not vigilant.
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to know an expert's point of view though. Looking forward to unlocking more secrets about staying fit and healthy.
Neat description of the first day at the gym..
ReplyDeleteI have my ups and downs at the gym. Few months I am very dedicated and at other times I care less. I guess consistency is also a key to achieving your gym goals. I love playing racquetball at the gym but its high time I supplement it with a good work-out regime.
Unless you're already fit, the hardest part of your first few trips to the gym is staying motivated. With so many new machines and what not, a lot of people can be intimidated and will usually just stop going to the gym and try some "at-home" routine as it's easier for them and less intimidating.
ReplyDeleteCertainly along side losing weight/adding muscle/etc., a top goal many should have is wanting to keep coming back.
Great intro though!
@ Piedro: You're spot on there. If you don't keep coming back then the other goals are irrelevant!
ReplyDeletethank you fitness nerd. My goal is to lose weight. Can you give me some tips?
ReplyDeletealso, remove the Word verification it serves no purpose.
ReplyDelete@ Katz Finance: Yeh.. sports are always a good way of getting your cardio in as long as you can ensure that the intensity is up there for a sustained period of time. Racquetball should be pretty intense, I would think.
ReplyDelete@ Ankit, Sneha, Blogger Bhaiyya: You might just find something useful in this space then!

ReplyDeleteNice Blog !!
ReplyDeleteI joined gym thrice once after 12th then in my second year college and once i was working..First 2 times I was looking for gaining weight and muscles while third time I planned to be more fit and build more stamina!!
But the problem with gym and for some ppl is the constant motivation to go to gym..Its very difficult to pick up again if u don't go for 2-3 days..Also sometimes you loose motivation completely and you might prefer to leave gym and pursuit more circuit training workouts, yoga or pursue indoor sport like squash..but in the end i feel its how an individual can remain motivated towards his goal and committed to it..Will u be posting on Circuit Training and Outdoor Workouts??
How do you keep yourself motivated to go through the same boring exercises day after day? I would rather play some sport like tennis or basketball or pool
ReplyDelete@ ruzd: Like I have said in the next couple of posts, sports are a good way of doing cardio as long as it's intense and involves a fairly high intensity. In a sport, you're all over the place in terms of intensity. A workout packs a punch in 1 hour, something less intense sports may not be able to.
ReplyDeleteAnd motivation is a must. How to keep yourself motivated, good idea for a future post! But I should think that if you vary your workout and challenge yourself every time, it shouldnt be the case. Good results should keep your morale up!
I have joined Gyms thrice. Didn't go for more than a week ever.
ReplyDeleteI guess one needs hot girls for motivation. :P
